What to Bring to Rehab: Packing List Guide

While deciding to enter into rehab is a crucial and potentially life-altering first step in the overall recovery process, it is also a stressful one filled with questions and uncertainties. One of the biggest questions people often have when it comes to entering rehab is what they are allowed to bring. While knowing what to bring to rehab is important, equally as important is knowing what NOT to bring. After all, bringing something to rehab that is against the rules can not only negatively impact a person’s ability to navigate the rehab process successfully, but it can also result in the person being asked to leave.

If you or a loved one is about to enter into a rehab program and aren’t sure what to bring and what not to bring, don’t panic. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know including the things you should pack, items you might want to bring but shouldn’t, and some tips to prepare you for what’s in store.

What to Bring to

Rehab

Rehab facilities are designed to create an environment that promotes support and sobriety. While facilities may differ when it comes to the rules and how they operate when it comes to the rules centered around things to bring, those rules tend to be more universal.

On that note, here are some of the more common things you should be planning on bringing:

It goes without saying that you need to bring clothes with you to wear. However, when going through your closet, remember that you aren’t looking to win any fashion contests either while in rehab.

As far as clothing goes it is important to prioritize comfort over everything else. After all, days in rehab are often spent in various therapy and group sessions as well as recreational activities. Having clothes that are suitable for all these activities is the safest bet.

In addition to comfortable, casual clothing and activewear, you will also want to make sure you are packing appropriately based on season and climate. While in the summer you may want more T-shirts and shorts, in the winter you may need more layers including jackets and gloves.

Also, while many rehab facilities do either have laundry facilities onsite or arrangements with local facilities, you will still want to make sure you pack enough clothing for 7-10 days.

Documents to Bring to

Rehab

In addition to those basic necessities, there will also be certain documents that you will need to make sure you have with you to ensure not just a smooth check-in process but also to help with your overall care during treatment.

Make sure you have the following documents with you at check-in:

  • A form of government ID such as a driver’s license, passport, or state-issued ID
  • Insurance card
  • Medical records or doctor’s notes
  • Prescription information
  • Any legal documents related to your stay such as court orders or probation paperwork

What Not to Bring to

Rehab

While it is important to know what to bring, it is equally important to know what not to bring. Trying to bring prohibited items to a rehab facility can be detrimental to your treatment and even result in you being asked to leave the facility.

Here are some items that you should NOT bring to rehab:

  • Substances of abuse
  • Non-approved medications
  • Cell phones or other electronics
  • Weapons or sharp objects
  • Expensive valuables such as jewelry or other high-value items
  • Offensive or vulgar materials or items
  • Outside of unapproved food or beverages

If at any point while preparing and packing for rehab you are unsure of or have questions about a specific item, please reach out to us at Focused Addiction Recovery. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Preparing to Leave To

Go To Rehab

Going to rehab can be stressful and emotional. However, there are some things you can do before you leave beyond just packing appropriately and making sure you have all the right documents to make sure things go as smoothly as possible.

Before leaving for rehab, consider doing the following:

  • Communicate with family or loved ones – Let your family, close friends, or employer know about your decision to seek treatment. Arrange for support systems to stay in touch during your stay.
  • Tie up all loose ends – Make sure things like bills are being taken care of while you are gone. Also, if you have pets or children that require care make sure that is all arranged before leaving.
  • Communicate with the facility – If you have any questions or concerns make sure you talk to someone at the facility BEFORE you arrive.
